Why Positive Affirmations Work (Plus 50 To Get You Started)

When it comes to using the law of attraction, nearly every resource out there mentions the importance of positive affirmations.

This simple practice might seem optional, and even ineffective, but the truth is that affirmations are a powerful way to change your life.

In fact, whether you realize it or not, you already say affirmations to yourself, you’re just not aware of it.

Every time you tell yourself things like, “I can’t do that” or “No one will support me” you are reaffirming that you can’t have the life you want.

Negative thoughts are so pervasive it’s hard to know you’re even doing it, and it’s something we’re all guilty of at some time or another.

Think about this, research from the National Science Foundation suggests that we all have anywhere between 12,000 and 60,000 thoughts per day, and about 80% of those are negative thoughts.  On top of that, 95% of those thoughts are repetitive.

If you participate in this kind of cynical self-talk then take a hard look at your life as it is now.

Are there things you wish you could do, but don’t dare try?

Are you where you want to be in your career and finances?

Do you have the relationship you want with your family and friends?

If you feel like there is room for improvement in any area of your life, consider the beliefs you have about that area.  Your beliefs are a direct cause of the gloomy things you tell yourself, so if something seems off-balance, changing your thoughts is a good place to start.

If you’re familiar with the law of attraction, then you know that your thoughts create your reality.   So what kind of reality are you creating through these thoughts of doubt, anger, and resentment?

Just imagine what would happen if you tipped the scale of your thinking just slightly. What I mean by that is trying to become aware of your thoughts and beliefs to at least think positively 51% of the time.

Sound like a challenge? It is, but it’s all about being self-aware and changing your language. It will take some time, but as long as you stick with it consistently, you will see a dramatic difference in your outlook and your life.

That’s where positive affirmations come in.

Using these on a daily basis will rejuvenate your mind so that you can gain confidence, compassion, and motivation.

Before you get started, let me get you some tips that will make them effective.

  • First, make sure you are totally relaxed. All the positive affirmations in the world won’t make a difference if you’re feeling stressed and overwhelmed.
  • Pick a good time to say them. Personally, I like saying them first thing in the morning when I wake up or right before I go to bed. These are generally peaceful times where your mind is relaxed and receptive to information, but of course, pick a time that works best for you.
  • Get centered by taking a few long deep breaths and try to keep a controlled breathing pattern while you say them.
  • Make sure to say each affirmation with as much energy and enthusiasm as possible.  You are retraining your brain, so you need to truly feel what you are saying is real.
  • Now you’re ready to say your affirmations. You can say them out loud or to yourself, but whatever you choose, keep that passion flowing.

If you start saying these affirmations every day for 21 days, you will notice a difference in your life. By that time you’ll have formed a new habit and you’ll be well on your way to transforming your life.

Saying these things alone won’t get you a better job or that special someone you dream of, but they will align you with the vibration that you need to be on to have those things. Once you are in line with that frequency you will start attracting what you want into your life.

    Great post, and something I do need to work on! I struggle with trying to be more positive in certain situations, and the negative thoughts do seem to take over sometimes. I’d probably say I need to focus on the career affirmations for sure, it is something I am looking to change and sometimes I just get so negative and down about it.
