Do you understand the importance of gaining clarity but find your thoughts are scattered like leaves across a field?

Maybe you are tying yourself in knots trying to make a decision on what to do with your life?  Or perhaps you’ve taken the first few steps already but now feel stuck and unsure of what to do next?

A lack of clarity can literally affect your whole life!

Think about it. If you don’t have clarity on what you are aiming for and how to get there, you don’t have anything.

Well actually, that’s not 100% true.

You do have 𝗦𝗢𝗠𝗘𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗡𝗚.

You have:

👉Overwhelm
👉Stress
👉A feeling of never being good enough
👉Confusion

An absence of clarity can impact 𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗬 aspect of your life.

When you feel stressed, lost, overwhelmed and lacking in confidence this not only has a negative impact on you but on the people around you.

Your family, your friends.

It’s a downward spiral.

You get sadder, they get sadder.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝗶𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗶𝘅𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲!

However,  it’s hard to do by yourself as you often can’t see the wood for the trees.

I was feeling like this myself not very long ago. I was stuck in a career I’d worked my way up in.

It was a career I’d been in for many years but I felt stressed and as though there were important pieces missing from my life.

I had some ideas of what I might want to do instead, but I had no CLARITY of what specifically I wanted to pursue or how to go about getting there.

I was pretty miserable now I look back.

Moaning about work all the time to my husband and my friends. Stressed out and not sleeping. My lack of clarity on what to do to get out of my situation, or what to do instead was crippling me.

Gaining clarity finally happened when I took the opportunity to chat things through with a colleague. I’d just come back from running a Myers Briggs feedback session (you know, that personality thing) and I was buzzing!

I said I wish I could do that type of thing full time and she simply asked me ‘why don’t you?’ She said she could see how enthusiastic I was, how I came to life when I talked about it.

At that moment I found my sense of direction!  I made a plan, got out of Human Resources and now I do what I love for a living.

Gaining clarity on what I wanted to do with my life was like a thick fog lifting.

9 tips for gaining clarity

I have good news for you.

If I can do this, then you CAN do the same.

👉 You CAN feel happy on a Monday morning.

👉 You CAN see the difference your work makes.

Imagine how it will feel to have crystal clear clarity!

For me, my happiness rubs off like glitter on those around me. I’m no longer having a negative impact on those I love. 💜

I promised you some quick tips for gaining clarity.  Implement a couple of these and you will feel clearer in no time at all.  (I recommend not trying all of them at once or you will stay overwhelmed!).

1.  Talk Things Through

You won’t be surprised to hear that talking things through with someone is my very first top tip!

In my case, I talked things through with someone who wasn’t wholly impartial as she already knew me pretty well.  This worked out well for me, but oftentimes it’s a good idea to talk things over with someone who doesn’t know you that well (or at all).

This can bring a fresh perspective.

The other person doesn’t come with all the preconceptions they may hold about you.  They can ask the obvious questions that others may be afraid to ask.

A coach is brilliant for this.  They give you the space to talk through your muddled thoughts and will guide you with questions, listening and coaching techniques.

2.  Write Stuff Out

Another brilliant tool is to write things down.  I’ve been journaling for a number of years now and find that freewriting what is going on in my head helps to get that tangle of thoughts into a coherent order.

It’s like the stress and confusion pours out of my pen onto the page.  I challenge you to try the same thing.

Try writing everything that is in your head, it doesn’t matter if it feels like an unholy mess!

Once you’ve written everything down, put your notebook to one side for a while.  Go back to it later and re-read it.  Look for patterns and themes.  After you’ve done that, maybe write it out again in a more structured way.  I find that this is a brilliant exercise for gaining clarity.

3.  Create Thinking Space

Have you ever noticed that your best ideas come to you when you are driving or in the shower?  For me, they come any time I don’t have access to a pen to write them down with.  Very annoying!

If you are feeling so overwhelmed that you don’t know which way is up anymore, then taking some time out and creating some space can be life-saving.

Ways to do this include meditation, going for a walk in nature (my favourite) or spending time on a hobby.

Another way to create space, which you may not have thought of, is to book a session with a coach.  You will have an hour or so of undivided attention on you (where else in life do we have this?)  It also gives you a chance to slow down and think.  Investing in yourself in this way can save you so much time and energy down the line.

4.  Remove Distractions

In our 24/7 switched on world, this can be a tough one!  Sit down at your laptop to work on something and immediately your Facebook notifications ping.  So you look at Facebook.  Then your email notifications pop up so you look at them.  Next someone comes into the room to ask you something….you know how it goes!  What was it you were working on again?!

Another way for gaining clarity instantly is to switch off the notifications, put your phone on aeroplane mode and go somewhere you won’t be disturbed.

5.  Get Rid Of Clutter

This one is a definite work in progress for me!

I always think that I’m organised but realise that clutter is still managing to somehow build up in my house…  And as for my electronic life, well don’t get me started…

Something I’ve found works well here is to set a timer for 15 minutes a day and set about decluttering one thing.  Whether that’s a kitchen cupboard, a section of your wardrobe, those overflowing books or some files on your hard drive, decluttering has many mental health benefits.  Once you feel calmer, you will have greater clarity on your next step.

6.  Stop Multi-Tasking

You might think you are getting more done when you multitask, but studies have shown that it actually reduces our productivity.  It also hampers your brain activity and a hampered brain is a confused brain!

Therefore, stop multitasking and focus on one thing at a time for a clearer sense of direction!

7.  Meditate

I’m a huge fan of meditation.  For me, it has so many benefits and doesn’t need to take up loads of time each day.  It can help you slow down those whizzing thoughts and sort through the chaos!

It’s best to practice meditation on a regular basis for it to have an impact.  You can start small with a couple of minutes a day.  Check out my beginners’ guide to find out how.

8.  Work Out What Matters

When you are trying to focus on a million things and have no idea what your priorities are, then it’s little wonder that your head feels full of tangled knitting!

To find your priorities with lightning-fast speed, ask yourself the following questions:

  • What needs LESS attention right now?
  • And what needs MORE attention?
  • What would you like to spend LESS time on?
  • And what would you like to spend MORE time on?
  • What is most important to you right now?
  • If you could do anything without any limits, what would it be?

Remember that you can’t do everything at once, so when you have the answers to the questions above, then work out your top 3 priorities and write them down in order.

Feel clearer?

9.  Check In With Your Health

If you aren’t sleeping, are eating junk and never move from your chair then your brain inevitably isn’t going to feel all that clear!

Therefore make sure you schedule time to rest and exercise.  Audit your diet, get rid of the biscuits from the cupboard.  Also, make sure you are up to date with health checks.  You wouldn’t buy a car and never fill its water and oil or get it serviced.  So don’t do it with your body!

I promise that if you take time to look after yourself then gaining clarity of thought is one thing that will follow.

I want to start with decluttering. I like your suggestion of setting a timer for 15 minutes a day and choosing an area to declutter. I’m going to try this starting today!
